Celebrating Keith King Day: Remembering the Founder of CEC and His Legacy in Education

Faculty and board members pose for a photo in front of a Keith King plaque that was recently installed to celebrate Keith King Day and CEC Colorado Springs.

Today, we celebrate Keith King Day, a day to honor his legacy and celebrate his vision and leadership that transformed education across Colorado.

King’s public service began in the Colorado State House of Representatives, where he served from 1999 to 2007, followed by his tenure in the Colorado State Senate from 2009 to 2013. He later continued his commitment to community leadership on the Colorado Springs City Council from 2013 to 2017. From his very first session in the House, King became a tireless advocate for students and families, sponsoring numerous bills to strengthen and improve charter school structures, operations, and financial systems. His work laid the foundation for the thriving charter school landscape we know today.

Keith King’s impact reached far beyond legislation. In 2007, he founded CEC in Colorado Springs, and his vision for accessible, high-quality education quickly resonated with families across the state, leading to the creation of additional CEC campuses all over Colorado.

As part of the Keith King Day celebration, our leadership of the CEC network and CEC Colorado Springs gathered at our CECCS campus to unveil the first plaque installation honoring our founder. Those in attendance spoke about his lasting legacy and leadership.

Because of Keith King’s foresight and unwavering commitment, thousands of Colorado students have graduated from high school with college degrees, workforce credentials, and the confidence to pursue their dreams. His belief in what young people can achieve has become the heartbeat of CEC’s mission
