CEC schools in Douglas County, Fort Collins, and Windsor among top 25 percent of all public schools in Colorado for academics

A “Performance with Distinction” rating for CEC Castle Rock, CEC Douglas County North, CEC Fort Collins, and CEC Windsor was approved by the Board of the Colorado Charter School Institute (CSI) on December 17, 2024.

CEC is among only thirteen CSI schools to earn a “Performance with Distinction” rating based on 2023-24 performance. CSI—which authorizes Colorado Early Colleges—assigns a rating and accredits its schools each fall based on its school performance framework, which considers a school’s academic, financial, and organizational data from the previous school year.

Unlike the state’s school performance framework, which has four levels of performance (Turnaround, Priority Improvement, Improvement, and Performance), the CSI school performance framework adds an additional level within the Performance band of Distinction. The additional rating level was included in CSI’s school performance framework to better differentiate the highest performing schools.

The academic portion of CSI’s “Performance with Distinction” rating is based on students’ performance on state tests in English Language Arts (ELA), math, and science. PSAT and SAT scores, dropout rates, matriculation rates, and graduation rates are considered when determining a high school’s rating. Aside from academics, the CSI school performance framework also considers sound charter school financial and organizational practices.

About Colorado Early Colleges

Colorado Early Colleges (CEC) is the largest and most successful network of tuition-free public charter schools in the state, providing Colorado families with accessible, flexible and individualized learning with a direct path to debt-free college degrees and career credentials through our three middle school and seven high school campuses, our college direct locations, and CEC Online Campus. In addition, we offer part-time enrollment options for on-campus and online learning to both homeschool and non-public school students — to complete core, lab and elective courses to supplement their curriculum. Included in this offering is our Everest Point Homeschool Academy, where homeschool students from kindergarten through the 12th grade can attend classes one day per week.

About the Colorado Charter School Institute (CSI)

CSI is a statewide charter public school authorizer in Colorado, currently authorizing over 40 schools from Towaoc to Steamboat Springs, Grand Junction to Colorado Springs and serving over 20,000 PK-12 students. As a charter authorizer, CSI focuses on the outputs—that is, the quantitative evaluation of academic, organizational, and financial school performance—providing schools the flexibility to focus on and make decisions about inputs like instructional strategies, educational programming, internal assessment system, facility selection, and staffing. The focus on outcomes rather than processes allows CSI to be neutral on educational model and maintain a diverse portfolio of school models, which include Classical, Early College, Alternative, and Montessori models.
