Asthma & Anaphylaxis Allergies

For those students with asthma or potentially life-threatening food allergies, Colorado Early Colleges (CEC) will follow the criteria set forth in the Medication Administration: Asthma/ Anaphylaxis Management Act SB 05-156.

Each student shall complete an Emergency and Medical Information form during the enrollment process. This form will be updated annually while the student is enrolled at CEC.

  • At the start of each school year, the school’s Registered Nurse (RN) will review all forms, note those students who have asthma or a potentially life-threatening food allergy, and provide them with the following forms for their parents to complete:
  • Health-Care Plan, which shall address communication between the school and emergency medical services, including instructions for emergency medical responders. If a student qualifies as a student with a disability in accordance with federal law, the student’s Section 504 Plan, Individualized Education Program (IEP), and/or other plan developed in accordance with applicable federal law shall meet this requirement.
  • Contract for Student Self-Carry of Inhalers or EpiPens (self-injectable epinephrine) at school (only required if student will self-carry).
  • Authorization to administer medication at school (if applicable).

The parent/guardian must promptly return all forms to the school’s Health Office and must also provide the student’s appropriate medication. The school’s RN will verify whether the student will carry and/or self-administer medication at school following C.R.S. 221119.5-R-1.00 — Determining Student Qualification to Self-Carry Asthma/Anaphylaxis Medication, and C.R.S. 221119.5-R-2.00 — Requirements to Self-Carry Asthma/Anaphylaxis Medication in Making the Decision.

CEC will provide:

  • The student access to his/her medication.
    • If the student is allowed to self-carry his/her medication, the student will be instructed to carry the approved medication in the outermost pocket of his/her backpack/schoolbag.
    • If the medication is kept in the school’s health room, it must be readily available and portable.
    • The school may request that a backup supply of medication be available at school for students who carry/self-administer medication.
  • Appropriate training to designated staff.
    • Designated staff will have access to medication when the school RN is off campus.
    • Designated staff will be trained by the school RN. Training will be reviewed annually and will include:
      • Instruction on the basic understanding of food allergies and the importance of reasonable avoidance of agents that may cause anaphylaxis.
      • Instruction on recognizing symptoms of anaphylaxis or asthma.
      • Instruction on appropriate response when a student suffers an anaphylactic reaction or asthma attack.
      • Instruction in the administration of self-injectable EpiPen or a rescue inhaler.
  • A process to activate the school’s Emergency Medical System (EMS)
    • The school’s Health Team and/or delegated staff will evaluate the student and call 911, if needed.
  • Reasonable accommodation to minimize or remove exposure to identified allergens.
