Immunizations
Both Colorado law and Colorado Early Colleges (CEC) require all students attending CEC to be vaccinated against certain diseases unless they have a Certificate of Medical or Nonmedical Exemption on file. To protect unvaccinated students, students with an exemption from one or more required vaccines may be kept out of school during a disease outbreak.
- Medical Exemption: A student who has a medical contraindication to receiving a vaccine that is enumerated within a Medical Exemption form signed by his/her parent/guardian and a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), or delegated Physician Assistant (PA) affirming a medical contraindication to receiving a vaccine.
- Non-medical Exemption: An exemption to one or more school-required vaccines based upon a religious belief whose teachings are opposed to immunizations or a personal belief that is opposed to immunizations. This process may be completed by parents/guardians, emancipated students, or students 18 years or older. There are two ways to obtain a non-medical exemption.
- Obtain a Certificate of Nonmedical Exemption by fully reviewing and completing the Online Immunization Education Module. This does not require the signature of a child’s health care provider. The Certificate of an emancipated student or a student 18 years of age or older MUST also include a signature from an immunizing provider in Colorado who is an MD, DO, APN, delegated PA, or pharmacist.
OR - The child’s health care provider 1) meets the criteria to sign the Certificate of Nonmedical Exemption, and 2) is willing to provide immunization consultation and sign the Certificate of Nonmedical Exemption.
- Obtain a Certificate of Nonmedical Exemption by fully reviewing and completing the Online Immunization Education Module. This does not require the signature of a child’s health care provider. The Certificate of an emancipated student or a student 18 years of age or older MUST also include a signature from an immunizing provider in Colorado who is an MD, DO, APN, delegated PA, or pharmacist.
In the event of an outbreak of a disease against which immunization is required, no exemptions will be recognized, and those students will be excluded from school.
If a student fails to comply with the immunization requirements, the School Nurse will personally notify the parent/guardian or emancipated student by telephone, mail, email, or in person. Emancipated students must be contacted directly rather than through their parents/guardians. The parent/guardian or emancipated student will be notified that:
- Up-to-date immunizations are required under Colorado law.
- Within 14 days of notification, the parent/guardian must submit either an authorization for administration of the immunization by health officials, a valid medical or nonmedical exemption, or documentation to the school showing that the next required immunization has been given along with a written plan for completion of all required immunizations.
- If the required documentation is not submitted within 14 days of notification, or if the student begins but does not continue or complete the written plan, the student will be referred to the appropriate CEC Head of School.
A student whose parent/guardian, emancipated student, or student 18 years old or older who does not submit an up-to-date validated Certificate of Immunization, immunization medical records, or a valid exemption may be suspended or expelled.
Any suspension or expulsion procedure under this policy will automatically be terminated upon compliance. Record of any such suspension or expulsion, with an appropriate explanation, will be placed only in the student’s health file, and not in the student’s disciplinary file.
Students in Out-Of-Home Placements
The following procedure shall apply to students in out-of-home placements, as defined by C.R.S. 22-32-138(1)(e):
- Unless CEC is otherwise authorized to deny enrollment to a student in out-of-home placement, CEC shall enroll the student regardless of whether CEC has received the student’s immunization records. Upon enrolling the student, the school shall notify the student’s parent/guardian that, unless the school receives the student’s Certificate of Immunization or a written authorization for administration of immunizations within 14 days after the student enrolls, the school shall suspend the student until the school receives the Certificate of Immunization or authorization.
Homeschool Students
Records for each child participating in a homeschool program must be kept permanently by the parent overseeing the program. These records must include, but are not limited to, attendance, test and evaluation results, and immunization records as required by C.R.S. sections 25-4-901, 25-4-902, and 25-4-903. At the school’s request, the records shall be produced and provided to the school that received the written notification rather than the State of Colorado, in accordance with 22-33-104.5(3)(e). CEC will not maintain or request access to these records for homeschool students enrolled in CEC’s part-time program.
